Rose, an affluent Lebanese mother and housewife, is preparing obsessively for her daughter’s engagement party, determined to make everything perfect for the arrival of the future in-laws. She lights candles, arranges chocolates, and squeezes an excessive amount of orange juice, all while retreating to the bathroom with a bottle between tasks. Downstairs, her husband yells insults, criticizing everything in sight. Only Becky, the calm and composed African maid who has clearly endured this kind of tension before, manages to keep her cool amidst the chaos.

GIRL

Director: Shu Qi

Superstar Shu Qi, icon of Asian cinema and muse of Hou Hsiao-hsien, makes her directorial debut with this self-penned, deeply personal coming-of-age drama. In a cramped home ruled by abuse, young teenager Lin Xiaoli keeps her head down, caring for her little sister while her father’s drunken rages cascade into her mother’s cruelty. Everything shifts when she befriends Li Lili, a rebellious classmate who skips class, smokes and urges Xiaoli to challenge the family’s toxic status quo. As escape glimmers, Shu Qi films with poised restraint, observing at a remove and tuning the viewer to intimate, everyday textures with a quietly harrowing strength. Tender yet unsentimental, Girl finds fragile beauty amid hurt and announces a formidable new directorial voice.

ROSE OF NEVADA

Director: Mark Jenkin

Rose Of Nevada is eerie, poignant and the tides are treacherous in this mysterious, daring work. Having brought Enys Men to Red Sea Film Festival in 2022, Mark Jenkin returns with his unique vision in this trenchant time-travelling tale of eternal loss. Two of the UK’s most exciting young actors, George MacKay and Callum Turner, headline this story initially set in a forgotten Cornish fishing village. Nick (MacKay) is trying to fix the roof over his head when he signs up as crew on a mysterious trawler called Rose of Nevada. Liam (Turner) is the stranger who drifts into town and ends up on board. All however, is not as it seems.

ALL THAT'S LEFT OF YOU

Director: Cherien Dabis

This compelling family drama traces three generations of Palestinians from 1948-2022, revealing the profound impacts of the Nakba. The story begins in 1988 with Noor, a man who joins a protest that turns violent in the West Bank. Decades later his mother, Hanan, recounts her son’s story, starting with the 1948 expulsion of his grandfather from Jaffa. Amid the hardship, the family holds on to the hope of returning to their ancestral home. A love story between Hanan and her husband Salim serves as a beacon of light. Through intimate, moving performances, this film explores how trauma and heritage shape the bonds between a grandfather, a father and son, while filled with moments of joy, love and humor.

KWIBUKA, REMEMBER

Director: Jonas D'adesky

In Kwibuka, Remember, Jonas D’Adesky tells the story of Lia, a Belgian-Rwandan basketball player facing the twilight of her career. Twenty years after fleeing the genocide, she is asked to join the Rwandan national basketball team. This journey stirs buried memories of a painful past: exile, family silences and the pain of a fractured identity. Through her eyes, the film explores confrontation between memory and the present, and a nation scarred by tragedy with a contemporary Rwanda brimming with life and creativity. The strength of Kwibuka, Remember lies in the delicate handling of generational trauma while highlighting collective hope. Balancing intimacy and history, the film transcends personal drama to deliver a universal story of resilience.
