- The Red Sea International Film Festival continues to attract a constellation of the world’s and region’s brightest stars, celebrating inspiring narratives.

On its fourth day, the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) continued to attract a constellation of the world’s and region’s brightest stars, celebrating inspiring narratives that contribute to shaping a promising future for filmmaking.
This year’s strong Festival program of MENA and global films is further solidifying its growing position as a leading global platform for cultural exchange between East and West.
Several films premiered at RSIFF today, with Noor, a feature film by Omar Almuqarri, opening the red carpet in the Cultural Square. The film tells the story of Mohammed Noor, who rose from humble beginnings in Mecca to become one of the most famous football players in Saudi Arabia.
The red carpet also featured screenings of Beyond The Shifting Sands by Abdullah Al-Hamdi, which blurs the lines between reality and imagination to portray art as a state of life where a person sees themself reflected in a drawing that takes shape – and then quickly fades away, and Circles of Life by Khalid Al-Dusaimani, which reinterprets the Saudi art scene by presenting art as a living process of continuous exploration and explores the interplay between memory and dreams. In addition, a distinguished selection of short films from the New Saudi, New Cinema was presented.
As part of the ‘In Competition’ program, the red carpet witnessed the premiere of Truck Mama by Kenyan director Zippy Nyaruri, which tells the story of a mother who drives a truck in Kenya and faces the challenges of dangerous roads to provide for her family; Barni by Somali director Mohamed Sheikh, which tells the poignant story of a nine-year-old girl who disappears after a wedding celebration in a quiet Somali village and Yunan by director Ameer Fakher Eldin, which tells the story of Munir, a young man who escapes to a remote island to make a life-altering decision, confronting alienation and his fading dreams.
In addition, members of the cast of Unknown, directed by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour, walked the red carpet. The film tells the story of Nawal, a 29-year-old divorcee who returns to her hometown in search of a fresh start. Also featured was the restored 1981 classic Umrao Jaan by Indian director Muzaffar Ali, which highlights the story of a local singer, dancer and poet and tells her personal experience with fame and stardom. This film is considered one of the most significant works in Indian cinema, underscoring the festival’s unwavering commitment to presenting diverse cultural dimensions that reflect the rich cinematic dialogue within today’s film landscape.
As for the inspiring ‘In Conversation’ panel discussions, the Festival hosted a constellation of stars and film industry leaders from across the Arab world and beyond, including renowned American director Sean Baker, Head of the Red Sea Feature Film Competition Jury and a leading figure in international independent cinema; Academy Award-nominated Lebanese director Nadine Labaki and acclaimed Egyptian actress Mai Omar. These sessions offer an exceptional opportunity to meet some of the most influential figures in the film industry and hear about their professional and personal experiences and life milestones.
Labaki spoke about how acting can give people the space to explore the different personas that each person has in them, freely. “My key inspiration is the human being and exploring human behavior drives every movie I do,” she said. Touching on the power of cinema, she said: “Cinema is very important to me – it’s noble and I believe that cinema is at its most effective when the tone of the film matches the emotional frequency of audience. That’s when the film and the audience find each other. Cinema has a huge role to play in changing the status quo – that’s the power of art”.
