Three sisters watch a small house in the midst of a vast grassland burn down; they have their arms around each other, but they are already arguing softly about their inheritance. They still have the family car; they plan to embark on a new life, but as they drive into the night, the lifelong resentments that have simmered between them rise to the surface. There is a sense that these hostilities may escalate – and, when they stop for fuel and a scream rings out into the darkness, we wonder if they already have.

Fasten your seatbelts: Brazil is in the throes of a military dictatorship and left-leaning academic Marcelo (Wagner Moura) is on the run and headed to Recife with his young son. Once there, he has to get his papers — and best the rogue’s gallery of characters and scenarios strewn in his path by director Kleber Mendonça Filho. Set in 1977, The Secret Agent is full of surprises, cycling between B movie set pieces, some pointed satire and duelling timelines and perspectives. It is a sharp political drama that delivers an entertaining and suspenseful ride, which won best actor and best director at Cannes this year for Moura and Filho respectively. It is also Brazil’s submission to the US Academy Awards.

• Proof of age may be required for age-restricted films.
• Recording devices are strictly prohibited in all screenings and panels • Badge holders may release tickets up to 60 minutes before the screening via the app, website, or Box Office. Unreleased and unused tickets will count toward the No Show Policy.
