Based between New York and Beijing, writer and director Story Chen was born in China. She graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts majoring in Film and TV. Her two student short films made there, “A Woman’s Gaze” and “Marina”, received several awards. In 2018, she was selected by the Asian Film Academy at Busan International Film Festival.

Chinese filmmaker Jianying Chen won the Palme D’Or at Cannes for the best short film with this post-apocalyptic genre story, which follows a young woman through a town about to be devastated by rising waters. An asteroid has hit the earth, leading to underwater volcanic eruptions. As the inhabitants of a small riverside town start to flee inland, Nian makes her way to her friend’s house to say goodbye. As she does so, she is assailed by memories.
