The Italian city of Naples, devastated by World War II, lies in ruins; orphaned children Carmine and Celestina survive life in the rubble-strewn streets by helping each other. This remarkable adaptation of Shuang Xuetao’s novel is the debut film from actor-turned-director Dong Zijian that flashes back and forth in time to tell a touching story of friendship and family strife. Following his father’s death, Limo (Liu Haoran) is flying back to his hometown in northeastern China, when he spots his childhood friend An Delie (played by director Zijian) (Dong) on the plane, who fails to recognise him. When their flight is diverted because of heavy snow, the duo go on a journey that brings back long-forgotten memories in which Limo has to deal with the demons from his past. Beautifully photographed by Pema Tsedan across two time periods, the film shows the long-term emotional impact of the traumas of our childhood.

The story revolves around Salma, a smart and strong-willed young girl who knows exactly what she wants out of life. Today, she's in search of ice cream; tomorrow, she plans to explore the world. Her character is a testament to the power of ambition and determination. Salma struggles with her father’s absence, who is often far away, adding complexity to her relationship with her mother, which has not always been easy. This family dynamic shapes her personality and decisions. Salma finds a supportive figure in her Sudanese driver, Qamar, who enriches her life experiences and provides her with a sense of security.

Ten-year-old Claire loves her family’s annual trip from the US to Italy, where they always spend a snowy Christmas at her beloved grandfather’s hotel in the Dolomite mountains. This year, however, they go in the height of summer; her parents are splitting up and want Lawrence (played by the inimitable Danny de Vito) to explain the situation to her. Claire’s immediate response is to insist that they must have Christmas right away, with all the celebration’s trimmings, even flying in her other set of grandparents for the occasion. She is pinning her hopes on the tradition’s charms to persuade her parents to stay together – a plan that backfires when her grandparents’ marriage also starts to wobble. A charming and entertaining film for all the family to enjoy.
