In-Conversation with Sigourney Weaver
Sigourney Weaver is a three-time Academy Award nominee and BAFTA and Golden Globe winner, celebrated for her iconic versatility in roles ranging from Ripley in Alien to Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist to Gwen in Galaxy Quest. In 2024, she received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival and the International Goya Award for her extraordinary contributions to cinema.
Born and raised in New York City, Weaver studied at Stanford University and received her master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama. She made her film debut in Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), later earning Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Aliens (1986), and further starred in Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, both of which she also co-produced.
Weaver earned dual Academy Award nominations for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl (1988), winning Golden Globes for both roles. Her credits include Ghostbusters II, The Ice Storm (BAFTA Award), A Map of the World, Galaxy Quest, Holes, The Village, Avatar (the highest-grossing film of all time), A Monster Calls, Call My Agent!, My Salinger Year, Call Jane, The Good House, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Master Gardener. She also executive produced and starred in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.
On stage, Weaver has appeared extensively Off-Broadway and on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for Hurlyburly and starring in acclaimed productions including Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. She co-founded The Flea Theater and remains active in environmental and humanitarian work, serving with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, Human Rights First, and the New York Botanical Garden.
In 2025, she made her West End debut in The Tempest and appears in The Gorge, with upcoming roles in Dust Bunny and James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. Weaver is a lifelong New Yorker.
