In-Conversation with Michael Mann
Legendary American director Michael Mann, developed his lean story-telling skills in television, working on crime series such as Police Story and Miami Vice. Many of his generally moody, stylized films revolve around the similarity between the criminal and the policeman pursuing him; the most famous of these is Heat, with its famous confrontation between Robert de Niro and Al Pacino.

Both Iman and her younger sister dream of finding true love, within the strict parameters of life. For Iman, there is an obvious obstacle: she is a Little Person, only 119 centimeters tall, which puts her out of the running for an arranged marriage. Instead she goes online, hiding her size and compensating with her big laugh and big personality. Her sister has an offer of marriage, but Khaled’s family has second thoughts when they meet Iman. To put things off, the man’s mother insists on a top-of-the-range refrigerator as a dowry. A light-hearted but fascinating mix of issues around marriage, disability and sisterhood, with a magnetic star performance by Mariam Sherif at its very big heart.
BREAD AND SALT

Bread and salt, a greeting in many languages, signifies friendliness and generosity. In this Egyptian classic, Buthaini meets young commerce graduate Saber when her father dies and she takes refuge in Cairo’s “neighbourhood of bread and salt”. Love blossoms between them but, when Buthaina finds work as a singer with the wealthy Bahjat Bey, she changes almost overnight, abandoning Saber. Hurt and shocked, he attacks her choices with such fury that she flees the neighbourhood, getting another job in a nightclub. It takes many more misunderstandings before love prevails in a satisfyingly happy ending. One of the best-known films by prolific writer and cinematographer Hussein Fawzi.
