Rakan and his wife Rim are looking for an apartment to rent instead of living with his aged mother. It seems they have found the right spot, except for the hole in the wall that looks as if someone bashed it with a hammer. Rakan seems strangely unengaged, however, barely speaking to his wife. Gradually, as we slip from present to past, we piece together the story that explains his barrage of unwanted calls, chance encounters with shady characters and outbreaks of violence. When his mother’s home is burgled and she is attacked, he is confronted by the person he least wants to see.

Afghanistan in 1972 is a cauldron of opposing political forces. Suraya, part of an influential political family, becomes head of the dominant Communist Party’s women’s organisation, believing it is the best hope for equal rights. Her friend Sima is sceptical of all politics and, as a talented musician, is dedicated to her traditional art and its romantic themes. Despite their differences, these two young women remain best friends through university, even when Sima marries and starts attending Muslim Youth meetings. When the army starts arresting Muslim activists, Suraya helps her friends escape to the mountains and the protection of the mujahadeen, but war follows them. The film is a marvellous testament to the courage and loyalty of Afghani women in the face of constant adversity.

The movie's unique feature is that the narrative skips back and forth in time across a decade so that we absorb all of their lives – highs, lows, romance and parenthood – as a jigsaw puzzle that helps us understand their decisions in the different phases of their relationship. It's a real tearjerker that shows how ambitious chef Almut meets Tobias, a data cruncher whose marriage has just ended, and then they fall in love and have to cope with all the hurdles put in front of them. When Almut decides to enter a high-stakes cooking championship the tension between them boils over.
