The remote volcanic island of Fogo, off the coast of Cape Verde, is a difficult place to make a living. Like many other young people, Nia chooses to go, leaving her new baby Nana to be raised by her grandmother. Nana is observant and sensitive; when she develops a high fever and is sent to recover with a healer under the volcano, she immediately responds to the magical atmosphere of the island’s interior. It is as if the island itself, along with the network of women who give the film a strong feminine energy, is caring for her. A moving story about longing and belonging, culminating in the older Nana’s quandary: should she stay here forever, or follow her mother into the wider world?

IRKALLA: GILGAMESH'S DREAM

Director: Mohamed Jabarah Al-Daradji

Nine-year-old dreamer Chum-Chum and Moody, a tough 13-year-old, navigate the harsh streets of Baghdad. Moody is obsessed with escaping to the Netherlands with Chum-Chum and his sister, Sara. Things changes when they meet Maryam, a fiery woman who has converted an old double-decker bus into a mobile school for street kids. After Maryam shows Chum-Chum an animation about the mythical hero Gilgamesh’s journey to the underworld, a new obsession takes hold. But Chum-Chum’s dream collides with a dark secret: Moody’s alliance with a ruthless militia leader and his plot to bomb protestors. Chum-Chum must now confront a brutal reality. Can one child's mythical quest save his friend, or will Moody’s dark path consume them both?

SIRÂT

Director: Oliver Laxe

‘Sirat’ is a term referring to the treacherous bridge between heaven and hell. Oliver Laxe’s film is certainly an odyssey and a sonic spectacular: his hypnotic rhythms carve a path for this temporal road movie in which Sergi López plays a father who has taken his son to search for their daughter/sister, missing in Morocco’s nomadic and quasi-feral rave scene. With an apocalypse taking place offscreen, the protagonist flees across a mythical landscape with a crew of non-professional actors. Sirât glimmers between sound and fury, pounds between loss and unfathomable grief, and leads audiences to what feels like the end of creation. Spain’s Oscar entry and 2025 Cannes jury prize winner is that rare cinematic achievement: an indelible gift of sound and vision. "This film contains scenes that may be considered sensitive for some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised"

UNIDENTIFIED

Director: Haifaa Al Mansour

Noelle Al Saffan, a 29-year-old divorcee, returns to her small hometown for a fresh start. A fan of true crime podcasts, she gets a mundane clerical job at the local police station, digitizing old files. Her life changes when a teenage girl's body is found in her school uniform, with no ID. Haunted by the girl's senseless death, Noelle decides to investigate. She uses her insight into the hidden world of women to identify the victim, befriending a group of women and other characters that all seem connected to the crime. To solve the mystery, she must challenge her preconceived notions about women and their threats.
