Ten-year-old Claire loves her family’s annual trip from the US to Italy, where they always spend a snowy Christmas at her beloved grandfather’s hotel in the Dolomite mountains. This year, however, they go in the height of summer; her parents are splitting up and want Lawrence (played by the inimitable Danny de Vito) to explain the situation to her. Claire’s immediate response is to insist that they must have Christmas right away, with all the celebration’s trimmings, even flying in her other set of grandparents for the occasion. She is pinning her hopes on the tradition’s charms to persuade her parents to stay together – a plan that backfires when her grandparents’ marriage also starts to wobble. A charming and entertaining film for all the family to enjoy.

YALLA PARKOUR

Director: Areeb Zuaiter

One of Zuaiter’s strongest memories of her mother is her radiant smile as a young woman on the beach in Gaza on one of the family’s regular holidays to Palestine. Her cousins would mock Areeb’s “outsider” accent, but according to her mother, this was where she belonged. From her current home in the US, Zuaiter combs the web for images that evoke something of her mother and finds teenager Ahmed Matar and his friends, a parkour team who use the ruins of Gaza’s bombed buildings as obstacle courses, laughing for joy against a background of explosions. She tracks Ahmed down online and the two become friends; meanwhile, he is determined that parkour will be his route out of the prison their shared homeland has become.

FARASAN BOAT 128 KM AWAY FROM ANCHORAGE

Director: Mowaffaq Alobaid

In 2016, a group of young men headed out on a short fishing trip around Farasan Island, off the coast from Jazan. Intending to be away for only an hour, they were soon driven off course in thick fog, heading unknowingly towards the war-torn Yemeni border. As they realized where they were and tried to head back, their boat ran out of fuel. For 90 hours, they drifted without food or water, constantly at risk from passing pirates or being shot from the shore. There were many moments when they despaired of surviving; then came a glimmer of hope.
