An adaptation of the late Egyptian literary colossus Ihssan Abdoulkoudos’s novel of the same name, this charming film examines the life of a man torn between three women. Hashem, a prominent plastic surgeon in his late ‘40s, consults Aliaa the psychiatrist to help explain his attraction to a much younger woman, Ruba, who manages his social media account. Wondering if Ruba may resemble Hashem’s mother, Aliaa instructs him to start writing a journal about his past relationships. Hashem is doubtful but, when he runs into another former flame on his way out of Aalia’s rooms, the pieces start to fall into place. Dhafer L’Abidine gives a compelling performance in a film that continues Egyptian cinema’s tradition of honouring Arab literature.

FARASAN BOAT 128 KM AWAY FROM ANCHORAGE

Director: Mowaffaq Alobaid

In 2016, a group of young men headed out on a short fishing trip around Farasan Island, off the coast from Jazan. Intending to be away for only an hour, they were soon driven off course in thick fog, heading unknowingly towards the war-torn Yemeni border. As they realized where they were and tried to head back, their boat ran out of fuel. For 90 hours, they drifted without food or water, constantly at risk from passing pirates or being shot from the shore. There were many moments when they despaired of surviving; then came a glimmer of hope.

SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON

Director: Reema Kagti

This entertaining romp is based on the life of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur film-maker from the poor Indian town of Malegaon who was inspired by his love of silent slapstick to make a film of his own, featuring local characters and put together by a crew of friends. As the locals favoured Bollywood escapism, he adapted some of their favourites with the tales transported to Malegaon. People loved it, but their success threatened to split the group, one of whom turned out to have bigger ambitions: a few hurdles had to be jumped before everyone realised what really mattered to them. It is a poignant and at times funny take on film-making, friendship and what happens when those worlds collide.
