Sarah is leaving Teheran for three years to study for her doctorate in Canada. Her flight is at 6 am. After an emotionally fraught final dinner with her family, she heads to an impromptu farewell party at her friend Farida’s apartment, intending to go straight to the airport afterwards. That plan implodes, however, when the morality police swoop in. Drinks are emptied, musical instruments hidden and women put on their overcoats, while Sarah is seized with terror that they will all be arrested – and she, of course, will miss her plane. Mehran Modiri, Iran’s popular satirist, who also has a chilling cameo as a police hostage negotiator, proves here that he is just as at home with a nail-biting drama.

U ARE THE UNIVERSE

Director: Pavlo Ostrikov

Far into the future, Earth is peppered with nuclear waste storage units overstuffed with radioactive garbage which, thanks to an increase in volcanic activity, is destroying the planet. Space trucker Andriy’s mission is to dump this waste on Callisto, one of Jupiter’s moons, from a rig with only a down-at-heel gym and a wise-cracking robot called Martin to keep him entertained. Then he sees the Earth explode behind him. Does this mean he is the last person left alive? Apparently not: the voice of a French woman reaches him from a distant space station. He just has to find a way to blast in her direction. Ostrikov contemplates the awful reality of loneliness, but provides plenty of laughs along the way.

THE LAST RONIN

Director: Maksim Shishkin

Haunted by the ghosts of the past, lone traveller Ronin wanders the post-apocalyptic wastelands in search of his father's killer. The devastation caused by climate change led to a global nuclear war, destroying civilisation as we know it: lands are scorched and cities destroyed. Electrical equipment no longer works and gasoline has long lost the properties that made it the world's greatest resource. The main currency in this new world is AK47 cartridges. Everywhere Ronin goes, he encounters blood-thirsty headhunters and rogue gangs all fighting for scraps in this dangerous new world. Then, one day, Ronin meets a wayward teenage girl who offers him a precious bounty for escorting her to her birthplace, a journey that will require all his fighting skills.

GHOST TRAIN

Director: Se-Woong Tak

YouTube creator Da-kyung (played by shooting star Joo Hyun-young), has made her name by recounting real-life horror stories but she has lost a lot of subscribers recently. Her quest to uncover the scariest tales possible leads her to Gwangrim Station; a subway station that is known for the mysterious incidents occurring there. While the station master (Jeon Bae-soo) is initially hesitant to reveal the hidden stories of his workplace, he gradually shares more and more spooky secrets, which does not leave Da-kyung unaffected. Telling one occurrence per episode, this series delights as an exciting play on horror and ghost story tropes, with a cleverly timed narrative structure, and a thrilling sense of atmosphere and mood.
