It is winter in remote Anatolia, the mountainous Kurdish region of Turkey, where elderly matriarch Keke is seriously ill. Her son Ali arrives from Germany to support her, bringing his daughter Hazal with him. For her, this is a journey into unknown territory. Hazal is only 21 and has never taken much interest in her family’s Alevi-Kurdish roots, but she is moved and curious when she learns her grandmother has asked to be buried with an old suitcase. Learning the story of the suitcase, she understands more of her family’s tragedy, of the violence, abuse, and displacement they have suffered at state hands, but also about the true strength, courage, and endurance of this dying woman.

TASTE THE REVOLUTION

Director: Daniel Klein

For nearly 25 years one of Oscar winner's Mahershala Ali's earliest, craziest and most brilliant performances has been hiding in a vault. Director Daniel Klein shot a film in the year 2000 about a group of revolutionaries putting on a world summit to counter political apathy and encourage America to stand up to capitalism but then world events got in the way and the film vanished. Now, after a call from Ali, who plays a revolutionary leader, the director has gone back over the footage and reimagined the film as a mockumentary about a documentary film crew trying to capture an event that they hope will be a modern-day Woodstock, but turns out to be more Fyre Festival.

HOLES

Director: Abdulmohsen Aldhabaan

Rakan and his wife Rim are looking for an apartment to rent instead of living with his aged mother. It seems they have found the right spot, except for the hole in the wall that looks as if someone bashed it with a hammer. Rakan seems strangely unengaged, however, barely speaking to his wife. Gradually, as we slip from present to past, we piece together the story that explains his barrage of unwanted calls, chance encounters with shady characters and outbreaks of violence. When his mother’s home is burgled and she is attacked, he is confronted by the person he least wants to see.

HANAMI

Director: Denise Fernandes

The remote volcanic island of Fogo, off the coast of Cape Verde, is a difficult place to make a living. Like many other young people, Nia chooses to go, leaving her new baby Nana to be raised by her grandmother. Nana is observant and sensitive; when she develops a high fever and is sent to recover with a healer under the volcano, she immediately responds to the magical atmosphere of the island’s interior. It is as if the island itself, along with the network of women who give the film a strong feminine energy, is caring for her. A moving story about longing and belonging, culminating in the older Nana’s quandary: should she stay here forever, or follow her mother into the wider world?
