Jim Jarmusch’s landmark indie road movie, made on a minuscule budget, won the Cannes Camera D’Or for the best debut film in 1984. It marked the beginning of Jarmusch’s career and a school of American film-making that was fun and formally serious, drawing inspiration from both European existential arthouse and trashy Americana. John Lurie and Richard Edson play Willie and Eddie, a couple of New York slackers who spend their days eating TV dinners on the couch and occasionally going out to cheat at cards. When Willie’s Hungarian cousin Eva (Eszter Balint) arrives to stay for ten days en route to moving in with an aunt in Cleveland, they regard her as a bother. A year later, however, they decide to take her to sunny Florida. Shot in 67 single-shot scenes in severe black and white, Stranger Than Paradise still feels as ironic, poetic and unutterably cool as ever.

Other movies

GIRL

Director: Shu Qi

Superstar Shu Qi, icon of Asian cinema and muse of Hou Hsiao-hsien, makes her directorial debut with this self-penned, deeply personal coming-of-age drama. In a cramped home ruled by abuse, young teenager Lin Xiaoli keeps her head down, caring for her little sister while her father’s drunken rages cascade into her mother’s cruelty. Everything shifts when she befriends Li Lili, a rebellious classmate who skips class, smokes and urges Xiaoli to challenge the family’s toxic status quo. As escape glimmers, Shu Qi films with poised restraint, observing at a remove and tuning the viewer to intimate, everyday textures with a quietly harrowing strength. Tender yet unsentimental, Girl finds fragile beauty amid hurt and announces a formidable new directorial voice.

HIJRA

Director: Shahad Ameen

A grandmother and her two granddaughters journey from Taif to Mecca. When the eldest granddaughter vanishes, the two remaining women travel north to find her, with their search highlighting the deep cultural and generational bonds between Saudi women. Set against the backdrop of the Hajj pilgrimage, Hijra portrays the intimate and emotional odyssey of these women, which evolves into a spiritual quest. Their journey carries the weight of an entire heritage and offers an emotional, powerful and insightful look at identity. Shot across eight Saudi cities, the film provides a deep dive into the nation’s rich cultural tapestry. Actress Khairia Nazmi infuses the story with profound emotion due to her strength and energy.

SEVEN SUMMITS

Director: Amir El-Shenawy

Saudi adventurer Badr Al-Shibani embarks on a quest: to climb the highest peak on each of the world's seven continents. Seven Summits documents his journey, which is as much a test of survival as it is a personal voyage of self-discovery. From the most remote and toughest peaks to his ultimate challenge on Mount Everest, Al-Shibani's story is a powerful exploration of human resilience, the search for identity and the firm drive to push past both physical and internal limits.
