It’s the winter of 2013 and Cairo is restless; the city churns with police corruption, unchecked lawlessness, religious turbulence, and the aftermaths of both the 2011 uprising, where protesting women were tortured and subjected to “virginity tests” and the Port Said Stadium massacre. Against this chaotic backdrop and with a strict curfew hanging over her head, Nour dares to go out on a date with Figo in the only private place the city affords: the car. Together, they drive through the bustling, vibrant streets with a view of the Nile reflecting the city lights. As her curfew approaches, Figo takes Nour to a scenic lookout – and popular parking spot - where she discovers that in this unhinged city, a woman is never safe.

GHOST SCHOOL

Director: Seemab Gul

This gentle yet arresting debut feature from Seemab Gul centers around 10-year-old Rabia, a clear-eyed, logical-thinking, courageous child protagonist who wants to understand the real reason for the abrupt closure of her school. Rumours start that the school is haunted and her teacher is possessed by supernatural beings. However, her day-long quest for the truth, fuelled by her simple desire for an education, leads her into an adult world that has been plunged into superstition. What soon becomes clear are the machinations behind a corrupt regime and classist society, giving way to the nature of its real victims. Ghost School is a bittersweet portrayal of injustice for Rabia and the hope of a better future for all younger generations.

KWIBUKA, REMEMBER

Director: Jonas D'adesky

In Kwibuka, Remember, Jonas D’Adesky tells the story of Lia, a Belgian-Rwandan basketball player facing the twilight of her career. Twenty years after fleeing the genocide, she is asked to join the Rwandan national basketball team. This journey stirs buried memories of a painful past: exile, family silences and the pain of a fractured identity. Through her eyes, the film explores confrontation between memory and the present, and a nation scarred by tragedy with a contemporary Rwanda brimming with life and creativity. The strength of Kwibuka, Remember lies in the delicate handling of generational trauma while highlighting collective hope. Balancing intimacy and history, the film transcends personal drama to deliver a universal story of resilience.
