Sofiane is the westernised young son of an Algerian diplomat who imagines he will take up a similar position when he finishes his studies in France. His life seems to be going to plan; nobody else recognises the anxiety seething beneath his apparent self-assurance. El Haj is a moody, taciturn and unsympathetic older man who works in a Muslim funeral home. When Sofiane is obliged to get a job quickly to regularise his immigrant status, he becomes an intern at the home, working under El Haj’s direction. Difficult as this is, Sofiane finds himself learning more about life from this sour man than how to deal with the dead – and discovering himself at the same time.

In-Conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker

Director: Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker is an award-winning actor, producer and businesswoman who has garnered four Golden Globe Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Emmy Awards. Parker stars as Carrie Bradshaw in the HBO’s television series And Just Like That opposite Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. The series is currently in production for the highly anticipated third season. Created by Darren Star, the show is a revival of the critically acclaimed television series Sex and the City (1998-2004) where Parker starred in and served as an executive producer. Parker starred opposite her husband Matthew Broderick in the revival of Neil Simon‘s comedy play, Plaza Suite directed by Tony Award winner John Benjamin Hickey. Plaza Suite is the third-highest grossing play revival in Broadway history. The play made its West End debut this past winter at the Savoy Theatre in London, where Parker’s performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2024 Olivier Awards. Alongside Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy, Parker can be seen in the American fantasy comedy film Hocus Pocus 2, directed by Anne Fletcher and written by Jen D'Angelo. The film, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, is a sequel to the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, in which Parker captivated audiences with her witty and peculiar performance as Sarah Sanderson, sister to Winifred and Mary Sanderson, three witches living in 17th-century Salem. Parker reprised her role as Carrie Bradshaw and served as a producer for the screen adaptation of the hit series with the theatrical release of Sex and the City and Sex and the City 2. MODI - THREE DAYS ON THE WING OF MADNESS

Director: Johnny Depp

Amedeo Modigliani’s life is in a bohemian state of chaos. It is 1916 and Paris is suffering the deprivations of war; with no money, he and his decadent friends drink, take loads of drugs, make art and fail to sell it, then argue with the landladies who want to evict them. Modi, as his artist friends Utrillo and Soutine like to call him, is offered a lifeline by an American collector (a superb cameo from Al Pacino) but, as usual, he sabotages the opportunity. Sadly, his true status as a leading light of modern art would only be recognised after his premature death. Director Johnny Depp clearly revels in his hero’s excesses, invigorating his story with the spirit of punk rock.

LITTLE JAFFNA

Director: Lawrence Valin

“You’re not in Paris any more. You’re in Little Jaffna.” During the civil war in Sri Lanka that raged from 1983 until 2009, Tamils in the Parisian district of Little Jaffna were forced to contribute towards buying arms for Tamil Tigers. Aya, ostensibly a grocer, leads the ruthless extortion gang that bleeds the community dry. Michael, a straight-shooting young police officer with Tamil roots, is sent to infiltrate the organization but as he befriends the gang’s members at terrible risk to himself, he starts to see the issue in a more nuanced way and feels his loyalties shifting. Valin combines the theatricality of Tamil movies with the hard edge of new French cinema, using largely non-professional actors, in this spectacular thriller.
