Raouf, the illegitimate son of ruthless Egyptian arms dealer Salim Ahel, works in the shadows doing his father’s dirty work and hoping one day to be recognised as family. Assassinations are his specialty. He loses his resolve, however, when he is told to eliminate Amina, daughter of one of his previous victims, when she starts hunting her father’s killer. Instead, he helps her to escape Ahel’s clutches and flees with her. What next? When Amina finds out who Raouf is, will she kill him? Or will he kill her first? Maybe Ahel’s legitimate son, in hot pursuit of the runaways, will kill them both? With the help of an all-star cast, Salama keeps us on the edges of our seats.

MARIA

Director: Pablo Larraín

Maria Callas, the greatest opera singer the world has seen, died aged only 53 in her sumptuous Parisian apartment, discovered by the devoted servants who had spent their days hiding her pills and trying to persuade her to eat. She had not sung in public for years. Larrain’s swirling work of fantasy shows La Callas remembering - or hallucinating - performances from her past, her long affair with Aristotle Onassis and her loveless childhood in wartime Athens, where she sang for German soldiers. Wandering Paris in her last days, Maria is trailed by an imaginary journalist to whom she tries to explain the pain and effort of creation. Angelina Jolie conveys Callas’s grandeur and her inner tumult in a landmark performance.

SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON

Director: Reema Kagti

This entertaining romp is based on the life of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur film-maker from the poor Indian town of Malegaon who was inspired by his love of silent slapstick to make a film of his own, featuring local characters and put together by a crew of friends. As the locals favoured Bollywood escapism, he adapted some of their favourites with the tales transported to Malegaon. People loved it, but their success threatened to split the group, one of whom turned out to have bigger ambitions: a few hurdles had to be jumped before everyone realised what really mattered to them. It is a poignant and at times funny take on film-making, friendship and what happens when those worlds collide.
