Belgian-Moroccan directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah bring the action movie techniques and energy of their previous film, Bad Boys for Life, to the story of two brothers from Belgium who join ISIS. Idealistic Kamal (Aboubakr Bensaihi) goes to Syria aiming to pull people out of collapsed buildings and film Assad’s barbarities. His mother, Leila (Lubna Azabel), is aghast when she sees him in a propaganda video holding a gun to a hostage’s head. Younger brother Nassim (Amire El Arbi), who has always worshipped his big brother, becomes ripe for recruitment. Politically charged as this story is, the Adil-Bilal duo focus on keeping the pace fast, the twists frequent, the heroes and villains unambiguous and the style pitched well above naturalism. There are even a couple of numbers where the terrorists burst into song. Along the way, their real contention is clear: to show how it is that good people can find themselves doing terrible things.

SABA

Director: Maksud Hossain

Saba, 25, lives in Dhaka with her demanding mother Shirin, a paraplegic whose frustrations and rage often find a target in the daughter who cares for her. When Shirin’s worsening condition requires surgery it falls to Saba to find the money to pay for it. Securing a job at a seedy Shisha bar, Saba befriends the manager Ankur and, for the first time, pictures what a life of her own could look like. Maksud Hossain’s debut feature is a close-up look at a complicated bond between mother and daughter that lurches between love and guilt, co-dependence and the longing for autonomy - but it is also a social drama, detailing the hardships that underlay the riots in Bangladesh earlier this year.

In-Conversation with Michael Mann

Director: Michael Mann

Legendary American director Michael Mann, developed his lean story-telling skills in television, working on crime series such as Police Story and Miami Vice. Many of his generally moody, stylized films revolve around the similarity between the criminal and the policeman pursuing him; the most famous of these is Heat, with its famous confrontation between Robert de Niro and Al Pacino.

SIMA’S SONG

Director: Roya Sadat

Afghanistan in 1972 is a cauldron of opposing political forces. Suraya, part of an influential political family, becomes head of the dominant Communist Party’s women’s organisation, believing it is the best hope for equal rights. Her friend Sima is sceptical of all politics and, as a talented musician, is dedicated to her traditional art and its romantic themes. Despite their differences, these two young women remain best friends through university, even when Sima marries and starts attending Muslim Youth meetings. When the army starts arresting Muslim activists, Suraya helps her friends escape to the mountains and the protection of the mujahadeen, but war follows them. The film is a marvellous testament to the courage and loyalty of Afghani women in the face of constant adversity.

TO KILL A MONGOLIAN HORSE

Director: Xiaoxuan Jiang

Saina’s father never taught him to ride: he simply put him on the back of a horse, a Mongolian herdsman’s natural habitat. Saina now earns his living performing spectacular tricks in equestrian shows for tourists, trying to make enough money to cover his father’s gambling debts as well as support his little son. His true vocation, however, is caring for his sheep and horses on the grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see - a way of life under threat from climate change, encroaching poverty and profiteering mining companies. A moving, superbly shot portrait of a man clinging to the things that make that life worthwhile: the endless sky, the silence, his herdsman’s heritage and his beloved horses.
