SEEKING HAVEN FOR MR. RAMBO

Director: Khaled Mansour

Hassan, his mother and his beloved dog Rambo are threatened with eviction by their landlord Karem, a car mechanic who wants to use their house to expand his workshop. Rising tensions culminate in a street fight between Karem and Hassan, settled by Rambo when he leaps in and bites Karem in the crotch. Humiliated, Karem promises bloody revenge. Thus begins Hassan’s search for a safe haven for his friend, a journey that will take him into the city’s underbelly, but also into the heart of his own fears, changing him forever. Sparked by a real incident, this is a film about the strong relationship between a man and his dog and a nuanced reflection on everyday violence.

HOLES

Director: Abdulmohsen Aldhabaan

Rakan and his wife Rim are looking for an apartment to rent instead of living with his aged mother. It seems they have found the right spot, except for the hole in the wall that looks as if someone bashed it with a hammer. Rakan seems strangely unengaged, however, barely speaking to his wife. Gradually, as we slip from present to past, we piece together the story that explains his barrage of unwanted calls, chance encounters with shady characters and outbreaks of violence. When his mother’s home is burgled and she is attacked, he is confronted by the person he least wants to see.

NAPOLI - NEW YORK

Director: Gabriele Salvatores

The Italian city of Naples, devastated by World War II, lies in ruins; orphaned children Carmine and Celestina survive life in the rubble-strewn streets by helping each other. Like so many others, they dream of going to America, where Celestina’s sister went two years earlier. One night, they stow away on a ship with an eccentric captain bound for New York, where they join hordes of Italian emigrants hoping for a better life in this strange new country. Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores shoots a rediscovered script by the Italian maestro Federico Fellini and scriptwriter Tullio Pinelli, who wrote it together 80 years ago as young aspiring film-makers before they collaborated on such classics as La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2.
