Seventeen years after the debacle chronicled in Lost in La Mancha, the same documentary team returns to Spain to witness director Terry Gilliam’s final tilt at making the Don Quixote movie of his fever dreams. He has tried six more times to make the film and is now 78, but no less determined; this time around there are no great disasters, but Gilliam is consumed not only by the usual budget problems but his own demons, revealed in intimate interviews where he wrestles with the question of what to do – what any artist can do – once he has realised his lifelong ambition. The result is both a revealing portrait of an uncompromising artist and a meditation on the creative drive itself.

SANTOSH

Director: Sandhya Suri

When Santosh’s husband, a policeman in a rural district in North India, is killed in a riot, the widow can only keep their home if she takes his job. Eager to succeed, she shows more determination than is usual among the misogynist male police when a low-caste girl is reported missing and then turns up dead. A charismatic senior woman officer, Inspector Sharma, is duly drafted in to head the murder investigation, becoming Santosh’s mentor. Success for women, however, generally means showing they can bend the rules as flagrantly as the men, where survival always comes at huge personal cost. A fascinating police procedural, focusing on the relationships within the force rather than crimes or culprits, the film is an investigation into deep-rooted systemic corruption.

MODI - THREE DAYS ON THE WING OF MADNESS

Director: Johnny Depp

Amedeo Modigliani’s life is in a bohemian state of chaos. It is 1916 and Paris is suffering the deprivations of war; with no money, he and his decadent friends drink, take loads of drugs, make art and fail to sell it, then argue with the landladies who want to evict them. Modi, as his artist friends Utrillo and Soutine like to call him, is offered a lifeline by an American collector (a superb cameo from Al Pacino) but, as usual, he sabotages the opportunity. Sadly, his true status as a leading light of modern art would only be recognised after his premature death. Director Johnny Depp clearly revels in his hero’s excesses, invigorating his story with the spirit of punk rock.
