This award-winning adaptation of Marie Bregendahl's 1912 novel is set on a farm in late 1800s Denmark. A 14-year-old is destined to be the first girl in the family to be educated at school until her mother goes into complicated labour. The daughter's education depends on her mother's survival. The sensational debut by Danish director Tea Lindeburg, who spent some of her own youth growing up in Riyadh, deals with the precarity of life, women's rights, and the balance between science and religion. Though set in the distant past, the film's themes are remarkably contemporary and prescient.
