In-Competition:This virtual-reality documentary takes viewers inside a “re-education” camp in Xinjiang, the largest region in China and now one of the foremost police states in the world. In the spring of 2017, officials in Xinjiang began imprisoning Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other predominantly Muslim minorities. By 2018, an estimated million people were in custody. Using animated pen-and-brush illustrations, the film draws its imagery from interviews with three former captives, three former prisoners - Erbaqyt Otarbai, Orynbek Koksebek, and Amanzhan Seituly – along with survivor sketches and satellite photographs. Reeducated has won prizes at SXSW, New Images, VRHAM and the Online Journalism Awards.
