The Red Sea International Film Festival announced the selection of twelve projects for its first edition of the Red Sea Lodge: Script & Feature<\/span>\u00a0lab.<\/span>\u00a0Today<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0an eminent jury composed of Nadia\u00a0Turincev, Meinolf\u00a0Zurhorst\u00a0and Yousry Nasrallah selected and announced the winners of the two $500,000 production\u00a0<\/span>grants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Red Sea Lodge Production Grant for a Saudi Project was awarded to\u00a0<\/span>Sharshaf<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>by<\/span>\u00a0Hind\u00a0Alfahhad, written by Hana\u00a0Alomair\u00a0and produced by Talal\u00a0Ayel<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>The jury said they were\u00a0enamoured\u00a0by the \u201cTouching and strong female character, and the bonds in a relationship that can bring us together and tear us apart.\u201d They were also intrigued that it was set in \u201c<\/span>A period of Saudi Arabia\u2019s history the world knows so little about, unveiled to us by Hind\u00a0Alfahhad.”\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Hind\u00a0Alfahhad\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Sharshaf\u00a0<\/span><\/b>is set\u00a0<\/span>in 1978. Haila, the daughter of a conservative Imam, marries\u00a0Mosa’ed,\u00a0 the son of a rich and well-known fabric stores owner. The young couple spend their honeymoon in Cairo.\u00a0Sharshaf\u00a0is a romantic drama that follows Haila as she gets to know what she wants through the magic of cinema and how this discovery is challenged later as extremism invades the society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Red Sea Lodge Award for an Arab Project was awarded to\u00a0<\/span>Bullets & Bread\u00a0<\/span><\/b>by<\/span>\u00a0Mohammad Hammad, produced by Kholoud Saad and Mohamed\u00a0Hefzy<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>Mohammed Hammad\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Bullets & Bread is about\u00a0<\/span>Youssef, a conscript serving his compulsory military service on the Egyptian eastern desert border who dreams of becoming a writer.\u00a0Awad\u00a0is a dangerous bandit from one of those tribes roaming that remote desert region who dreams of giving a better life for his family in Cairo. Their paths were not meant to cross but a true friendship will grow between them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The jury enjoyed the dynamic at the film\u2019s heart which they described as\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSoldier and Gypsy; Laurel and Hardy; Friendship and Adversity. We can\u2019t wait to be part of this road trip, this cinematic voyage.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Jury also gave a special mention to the Saudi Project\u00a0<\/span>Four Acts of Disruption directed\u00a0<\/span><\/b>by\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Hussam\u00a0AlHulwah\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>and produced by Mohammad\u00a0Alhamoud<\/span><\/b>, which will be awarded $25,000 by the Red Sea Lodge for further development. The story is set in\u00a0<\/span>the 1930s while the newly formed Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is adjusting to the arrival of American oil prospectors<\/span>. The jury gave special recognition to the project and stated \u201c<\/span>The film has huge potential and we hope that Hussam\u00a0AlHulwah\u00a0and Mohammad\u00a0Alhamoud\u00a0can continue to develop the project and bring it to fruition<\/span><\/i>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The six Saudi projects selected for the inaugural Red Sea Lodge:\u00a0<\/span>Basma<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0written by Fatima Al-Banawi and directed by\u00a0<\/span>Ali\u00a0Alsumayin,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Practicing Polygamy<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>directed by\u00a0<\/span>Malak Qouta,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Four Acts of Disruption<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>directed by\u00a0<\/span>Hussam\u00a0AlHulwah,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>When The Star Goes Down<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>directed by\u00a0<\/span>Mohammed Salman,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Sharshaf\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>directed by\u00a0<\/span>Hind\u00a0Alfahhad\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Hejj\u00a0to Disney<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>directed by\u00a0<\/span>Maha Al-saati.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In collaboration with the\u00a0TorinoFilmLab, the Lodge hand-picked twelve emerging filmmakers, pairing each with an experienced mentor to support and enhance their work throughout the creative process.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The comprehensive program is for directors and producers, with scriptwriters if on board, to hone and further all aspects of their vision. Every stage of filmmaking was explored, from script consultations to working with experts in the fields of directing, cinematography and sound, through to post-production as well as a commercial focus on financing, sales, and audience engagement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On another note of exciting news: Director Maha Al-Saati\u2019s Red Sea Lodge project\u00a0<\/span>Hejj\u00a0To Disney<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was selected for TIFF Filmmaker Lab, and for the upcoming development\u00a0programmes\u00a0at Malmo Arab Film Festival (MAFF) and El-Gouna\u00a0Film Festival.\u00a0<\/span>Saudi director Al Saati will also participate in The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Residency in 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
