In 2019, following the death of his mother, filmmaker Karim Aïnouz decides to travel for the first time to Algeria, the country where his father was born. They never met, but Karim knows he has extended family living high in the Atlas Mountains. Beginning his journey with a boat trip across the Mediterranean, he makes his way to his remote destination accompanied by the memory of his mother, to whom he addresses himself in an imaginary letter full of questions he wishes he had asked her. Past, present and future are interwoven in this enthralling, inventive and very personal essay.
